TCIP’s Earthquake Resistant Building Design Competition receives 75 applications from 28 different cities

Preliminary applications for the Earthquake-Resistant Building Design Competition, which is organized by Turkish Catastrophic Insurance Pool (TCIP/DASK) for the fifth year with the aim of increasing the awareness of the need for earthquake-resistant building and offering civil engineering students a chance to work in the design, analysis and model-building phases for earthquake-resistant high-rise buildings, were finalized. 24 teams of civil engineer and architect candidates that managed to pass the preliminaries will build their models with materials to be provided by TCIP in accordance with the Technical Specifications. The final phase will be held in İstanbul, at the Ottoman Archives Building on 7-8-9 April 2019.  During the final competition, the models will be evaluated based on the criteria such as their compliance with the technical specifications, and their performance on the shaking table that simulates earthquakes.

Top ranking universities will be rewarded
Among the buildings that do not collapse during strong earth movements of the simulator, the most successful design and application will be the winner based on additional evaluations according to several other parameters. In addition to top 3 teams, best architecture, best earthquake performance and best presentation & communication skills will also be rewarded.

“We are really happy with the attention our competition has received in its fifth year. All applications were meticulously evaluated by our judges and Technical Advisory Committee in accordance with the scope defined in the project specifications to determine the finalist teams. I would like to thank all applications and their valuable teachers, and wish the best of luck for all our competitors. TCIP also wishes academic success for the teams that could not pass the preliminaries. I should remind them that we will definitely be expecting their applications once again for next year’s competition,” said İsmail Güngör, Coordinator of Turkish Catastrophic Insurance Pool (DASK).
