DASK Earthquake Resistant Building Design Competition received 76 applications from 35 cities

Organized by DASK (Turkish Catastrophic Insurance Pool) to offer a chance for future civil engineers to turn their academic knowledge in earthquake-resistance building design into practice and work in the designing, analysis and modelling phases for high earthquake-resistant buildings, the fourth Earthquake Resistant Building Design Competition has received 76 applications from 51 universities. The number of cities and universities applying for the competition has increased with these applications. Some universities applied with several different teams for the competition, which offers future civil engineers and architects to work together and creates a platform for inter-disciplinary cooperation.

24 teams will compete in İstanbul for the Grand Finale

DASK’s Earthquake Resistant Building Design Competition is the one and only competition in the field of earthquake engineering. Preliminaries were completed right after the application process. 24 of the 76 applicant teams became entitled to compete in the Grand Finale that will be held in İstanbul. For this second phase, DASK will send modelling equipment to 24 finalist teams. After that, teams will build their models in accordance with the Technical Specifications and complete it until the finals. The final phase will be held in İstanbul, at the Ottoman Archives Building in Kağıthane.  During the final competition, the models will be evaluated based on the criteria such as their compliance with the technical specifications, earthquake loads, performance on the shaking table that simulates earthquakes, and their price/performance ratio.

“We are extremely pleased with the attention our fourth competition has received. I would like to thank the applying teams and their valuable teachers with all my hearth. The judges and a Technical Consultation Committee meticulously evaluated all the applications in accordance with the contents set forth in the Technical Specifications to determine the finalist teams. DASK wishes success to all other eliminated teams in their academic endeavors and would like to see them apply once again next year. And I wish all the best for 24 finalist teams,” said İsmet Güngör, Coordinator of the Turkish Catastrophic Insurance Pool (DASK).
