Sunday, December 11, 2022
Address: Isbank Tower Levent Beşiktaş İstanbul
İş Sanat Kibele Art Gallery starts its new exhibi-
tion season on Thursday, September 22, with the
exhibition titled “Mavilerde 60 Yıl” (60 Years in
the Blues) by Mustafa Pilevneli, one of the prom-
inent representatives of contemporary Turkish
painting art.
Pilevneli, who has realized countless architectural
applications with materials such as glass, mosaic,
stained glass, ceramics, wood, concrete and alumi-
num, as well as oil-acrylic canvas paintings, wa-
tercolor and colored engravings he has produced
throughout his long artistic life, is building a mag-
nificent world with his works in different branch-
es of visual arts. The master artist, who takes art
lovers on a magical journey through his canvases,
paints huge surfaces in one of his works, while in
another, he can depict a huge world where you will
get lost in a tiny piece of wood.
In the book prepared for the exhibition and bearing
the same title as the exhibition, Ömer Faruk Şer-
ifoğlu interprets Pilevneli’s emphasis on the color
blue in his recent paintings as his internal reckon-
ing with life and himself, and uses the phrase “He
almost draws and paints poetry”. In the article he
wrote for the exhibition catalogue, Sunay Akın
said, “Away from his friends playing leapfrog and
jumping rope, a child is sitting on the floor, with a
pen in his hand, is drawing an architectural struc-
ture he has never seen before in his notebook. He is so fascinated that he does not even notice the teacher approaching
him from the fairy tale tow-er opposite… The painting on the paper is the ‘Fenerbahçe’ lighthouse, which gave the cape
its name, and the painting he made that day is the first painting that Pilevneli remembers.”
Usuing skillfully all the technical subtleties in his works, which he applies sincerely and sensi-tively to the essence of
life, with his impressions and knowledge, and has acquired a unique place in contemporary Turkish painting with his
unique style, taste, texture and productivity, Mustafa Pilevneli’s exhibition titled “60 Years in the Blue” can be visited
free of charge at the Kibele Art Gallery in the İş Towers in Levent, Istanbul, between 09.00 and 19.00 every day. On
concert and event days, the exhibition is open to visitors until 20.30.
Mustafa Pilevneli, born in Istanbul in 1940, started to work as an assistant at the same school after graduating from
the State School of Applied Fine Arts, where he was a student. In 1963, he studied mural painting and techniques at
Stuttgart Fine Arts Academy with an art scholar-ship from Federal Germany (DAAD). The artist, who creates works of
art with glass, metal, mosaic, ceramic, concrete and synthetic materials for countless private and official buildings in
the country and abroad, crowned his art life, where he opened numerous exhibitions with variations of engraving, wa-
tercolor and painting techniques, with awards and jury member-ships in state exhibitions and competitions organized by
private institutions. In 1992, he was the commissioner of the exhibition A Section from Contemporary Istanbul Paint-
ing in Phila-delphia, USA. In 1997, he conducted research at the Washington Museums. Having retired from Marmara
University Fine Arts Faculty Painting Department in 2007, Pilevneli worked at Işık University Fine Arts Faculty and
Doğuş University Faculty of Art and Design.
