Diomede Islands
Diomede Islands consist of two rocky islands between Alaska and
Siberia in the middle of the Bering Strait. These two islands are
only 3.8 kilometers apart from each other, but the border between
them is of vital importance. The islands are separated by an in-
ternational border, which determines the border between Russia
and USA, and coincides with the International Date Line as well.
Big Diomede belongs to Russia and Small Diomede belongs to the
USA; and thanks to the International Date Line crossing between
the islands, Big Diomede is 23 hours ahead of Little Diomede. Be-
cause of this, the islands are sometimes called Tomorrow Island
and Yesterday Island.
Haiti and Dominican Republic Canada - USA
The border between Haiti, poorest country of the Western Hemi-
sphere and Dominican Republic, a middle income country, is per-
haps the most heartbreaking border in the list. Stretching out for
380 kilometers, this border simply summarizes the differences be-
tween the two countries. It is hard to find any trees on the Haitian
side; but Dominican Republic is dressed in verdant green fields
thanks to illegal logging law.
USA and Canada
The border between USA and Canada is 8.891 kilometers long,
being the world’s longest border between two countries. The fact
that it is located between the world’s second and fourth largest
countries by surface area is apparently the reason for this border’s Netherlands and Belgium
length.
